Home — Guest-ready in 60 minutes

When guests are an hour away you are not cleaning, you are prioritising. People notice smell, floors, surfaces and the bathroom, roughly in that order. Everything else can wait. Set a timer and work in this sequence — the order matters more than the effort.

0–5 minutes: air and bins

Open every window. Empty the kitchen bin and any bathroom bin and take the bag out of the flat now, not later. Smell is the first thing anyone registers and the slowest thing to fix, so it goes first.

5–20 minutes: clear, don't clean

Take a laundry basket and walk the flat once, collecting everything that is out of place. Do not put things away as you go — that is what turns 15 minutes into an hour. Put the basket in a bedroom and shut the door.

  • Clear worktops, dining table and coffee table completely
  • Shoes and coats out of the hallway
  • Dishes into the dishwasher or a sink of hot water
  • Cushions straightened, throws folded, beds made

20–35 minutes: the bathroom

Guests will use it and will look closely. Toilet inside and out including the seat hinges, basin and taps, mirror, then the floor around the base. Put out a clean hand towel and check the loo roll. Wipe the shower screen if it is visible from the door.

35–50 minutes: kitchen and floors

Wipe worktops, the hob and the sink, then dry the taps so they shine. Vacuum the rooms guests will see, focusing on the middle of floors and the hallway, and quickly mop hard floors. Skip edges and under furniture entirely — nobody will look, and you do not have time.

50–60 minutes: the finishing touches

Turn on lamps rather than overhead lights, which flatter a room and hide dust. Straighten anything in eye line, close doors to rooms you skipped, and put something on to boil or bake — a kettle, coffee or anything warm makes a home read as cared for. Wash your hands, change your top, done.

What to skip without guilt

Inside cupboards, the oven, skirting boards, windows, wardrobes, the spare room and anything above head height. None of it will be noticed in a single evening, and all of it belongs to your normal weekly or monthly routine.

Common questions

What makes the biggest difference in the shortest time?
Clearing flat surfaces and taking out the bins. A tidy, fresh-smelling room reads as clean even when it has not been deep cleaned.
Do air fresheners help?
Only after you have removed the source. Layered over cooking or bin smells they make things worse — open windows first.
Can a cleaner come at short notice?
Sometimes, depending on availability in your area. Booking a regular slot before the busy season is more reliable than a last-minute request.
